- Cristo Recogiendo Su Ropa Despues de los Azotes Retablo by Concepcion Avila
- Retablos are important to Mexican folk religion because they are a physical representation of holy images such as Christ, the Virgin Mother, or one of the many thousands of saints. They come from the need humans have to interact on a personal level with divine spirits. Retablos are evidentiary support for communication between the divine and humans.
- Mexico, ca. 1850 to 1900 CE. An extremely rare retablo representing El Cristo de la Columna or Scourged Christ after he is scourged at a pillar before crucifixion; the colonnade and instruments of his castigation in close proximity and perhaps at one of the Stations of the Cross from the church in Queretaro where the infamous Emperor Maximillan received his last communion before being executed on the Hill of Bells following his defeat by the army of Benito Juarez. This theme depicting the tortured and bloody Christ was quite popular with prisoners who could empathize with the subject. This example is a rare and richly dramatic depiction.
